A personal account, the dog gut health research context, and how to approach it safely
A backyard discovery worth sharing
A few years into running my worm farm, I started noticing something: friends whose dogs were dealing with an upset stomach or loose stools would try a small amount of my vermicast (worm castings), and several reported their dogs settling down within a day or two. That happened often enough, across enough different dogs, that I started digging into why it might be working — and what I found genuinely surprised me.

Why I started looking into this
I’m a veterinarian, and my own interest in this began with a personal bout of significant digestive distress. A friend suggested fulvic acid, and I remembered that worm castings are naturally rich in it, so I tried a small amount alongside slippery elm powder (a traditional soothing, demulcent herb) on an empty stomach. I felt well again within about two days, without recurrence. Since then, I’ve seen the same combination help a number of friends and their dogs dealing with ongoing loose stools.
I want to be upfront about what this is and isn’t: it’s personal and professional experience, not a controlled study, and it hasn’t been tested in a clinical trial. My veterinary background shapes how I’ve used this myself and with animals under my own care and judgement — it doesn’t change the guidance on this page, which is written for a general audience without that training. The safety thresholds below apply to everyone, regardless of anyone’s professional background.
What’s actually in worm castings
Vermicast isn’t one ingredient — it’s a mix of living organisms, enzymes, and stable organic compounds that forms as earthworms digest organic matter:
Beneficial bacteria. As organic matter passes through a worm’s gut, it becomes colonized by Bacillus species — the same genus behind many human and livestock probiotic supplements. These are “soil-based organisms,” and there’s published research showing Bacillus spores can survive digestion and support gut health in humans, poultry, and pigs.
Humic and fulvic acids. These are natural compounds that form during decomposition, and they’re already a recognized (if still-emerging) category in the pet supplement world — you can find commercial humic acid products marketed specifically for dogs. A 2026 peer-reviewed study using canine intestinal and immune cells found that humic acid helped preserve gut barrier integrity and reduced inflammatory markers under simulated stress conditions. Other research in livestock has linked humic substances to better gut lining protection, improved mineral uptake, and healthier stool.
Digestive enzymes. The worm gut carries amylases, proteases, lipases, and cellulases, largely produced by the resident bacteria — and because many originate from Bacillus, they tend to be notably hardy compared to enzymes from other sources.
The honest caveat: none of this research has been done on vermicast itself, and none of it has been done on live dogs eating worm castings specifically. The closest evidence is either livestock feeding trials, human probiotic research, or lab-based (cell culture) canine studies using purified, commercially manufactured humic acid — not raw worm castings from a backyard bin. I think the mechanism is genuinely plausible. I can’t tell you it’s proven.
It matters which worm, what they’re fed, and how you select the castings
Not every worm bin produces the same thing. A few of the concepts covered in depth in the full guide:
- The worm species matters. Red wigglers / tiger worms (Eisenia fetida) are the practical top choice — not because they’re proven to produce more of any single compound, but because they’re the species nearly all the underlying research is actually based on, and they’re the most forgiving and widely available for home setups.
- What the worms are fed shapes both benefit and risk. A plant-based diet (vegetable scraps, garden waste) kept free of meat, dairy, and pet waste carries meaningfully lower pathogen risk than manure-fed systems, and any manure input needs proper hot pre-composting before it ever reaches the worms.
- Keeping vermin out of the bin isn’t just tidiness — it’s biosecurity. Rodents in particular can introduce pathogens directly into a bin, so a secure, well-managed setup matters if the output is ever going to be used the way I use mine.
- Not every batch is fit to use. Fully cured, earthy-smelling, mold-free castings from a known, plant-based feedstock are the only kind worth considering.
A note on slippery elm
Slippery elm plays two roles, not one. Mixed with water, it forms a soothing, mucilaginous coating that calms irritated mucous membranes along the digestive tract — its traditional, best-established use. But the same soluble fiber also passes largely undigested into the colon, where resident bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids that feed and support a healthy gut lining — a prebiotic role that’s described consistently in veterinary herbal literature, alongside its soothing effect.
Why I’m sharing this here, not through an official channel
I did try to take this further. I spent time exploring whether this concept could be formally developed and officially recognized as a legitimate animal health product, working through what that path would actually require.
What I found is that the regulatory frameworks for feed additives and supplements are built around a single, named, chemically-characterized ingredient — something with a fixed identity that can be tested, guaranteed, and reproduced batch after batch. Natural vermicast is fundamentally the opposite of that: it’s a living, variable mix of organisms and compounds that shifts with feedstock, season, and process. That’s not a flaw in the product — it’s simply not the kind of thing current regulatory systems were designed to evaluate, and bringing it into formal compliance would have meant stripping out most of what makes it what it is.
Rather than shelve it, I decided the more useful thing was to share what I know openly and responsibly — with the science, the caveats, and the safety guidance all laid out plainly — so that people who want to make an informed choice for their own dogs can do so, guided by their own vet’s judgement where it matters. That’s what this page and the guide below are for.
Safety comes first
Not all vermicast is equal, and quality matters enormously if you’re considering this for your dog:
- Only use fully mature, well-cured castings — material that’s finished decomposing, has an earthy smell (never sour, ammonia-like, or musty), and has had time to cure for at least a few months.
- Know your source. Home worm bins fed only plant-based kitchen scraps and garden waste carry a different (lower) risk profile than bins that have processed manure or meat scraps. If you’re sourcing from someone else, ask what went into the bin.
- Start small, and give it on an empty stomach, between meals. Many people, including the author, use fresh vermicast paired with slippery elm powder mixed into a paste — timed away from regular feeding, which is thought to reduce stomach acid exposure and improve survival through to the gut. - Watch your dog closely, especially the first few times.
- This is not a substitute for veterinary care. If your dog has persistent, severe, or bloody diarrhea, is vomiting repeatedly, seems lethargic, won’t eat or drink, or shows any sign of dehydration — see a vet, don’t experiment. This applies regardless of dose or who is administering it.
