9 Proven Ways to Attract Owners

Here are nine proven ways that you can quickly get fabulous owners for your puppies, even if you only have hours in which to do that!

How? By leveraging the power of cuteness of puppies.

In my travels, I have found that puppies are one of the most shareable things online and if you do it right, you can quickly attract really great owners in a very short period of time. So let me explain how to do it.

Shoot Puppy Videos

Well, the first thing you’ve got to do is you’ve got to take a great video of your puppies. And I would even say that you should take several great videos of your puppies, each one from just a few seconds to up to three minutes long. And when you’ve shot a good one, then it’s time to start taking action.

It can take you a very short period of time to take some great videos in that very short duration and then you can edit them a little bit, if you want to, or just take good ones from the start.

There’s free editing tools available online – you can look that up.

Upload to Youtube

But once you have your great little video, the first thing to do is to upload it to YouTube. And then of course, you’re going to need a YouTube channel, which only takes minutes to create. Then upload it onto YouTube. Be sure you use the right kind of keywords on it and text such as “[YOUR BREED] puppies”. Put those tags on it in the tag section and the description. Make sure that you have a link. If you’ve got a Facebook page and a website, have a link back to your Facebook page and your website. Okay? So that’s the first thing to do.

The second thing to do is take that same cute video and post it on your Facebook page. Now, if you’ve got a Facebook page as a breeder, in the business section of Facebook, great, use that page, load it up separately. Don’t just share the link onto the page. Make sure you load it up separately, right from the source file and put that up there and it is very, very shareable. People will be looking at that and loving the content. Don’t be salesy. Don’t say: “I have these puppies for sale. Check them out.” Don’t so anything like that because that will quickly get your post banned because you’re not allowed to sell puppies on Facebook. But what you can do is to share it and people will start asking questions like, “Are these puppies for sale? Have you sold them all yet?”

And then you can say, “Well, PM me and I’ll give you more information,” Or you can just PM them yourself. So that’s the second thing to do with that same video. The second strategy only takes hours. Take the video, put it up on YouTube and then uploaded again onto Facebook.

If you don’t have a Facebook breeder page, just upload it onto your profile page, your personal profile page. That will do okay.

Share to Breed Enthusiast Groups in Your Area

The next thing you need to do is to find some Facebook groups where they specialize in the interest of your particular breed in your area. So for example, if you’re a Schnauzer breeder in Western Australia, like I am, then it would be a Facebook group or community centered on our shared love of Schnauzers, based in Western Australia.

There’s three groups like that. So what I would do, as a long-term member of those groups anyway, as I’m sure you’re a long-term member of your groups in your area for your breed, is share your posts that you’ve just put up on Facebook. Share it on those pages and you’ll get a lot of attraction and a lot of interest from people who already love your breed. So there’s three very quick ways that you can attract people to buy your puppies.

Hold A Puppy Open Day

The fourth way is a puppy open day. It’s an opportunity for people who might be interested in buying a puppy to meet your puppies. You always end up with new people joining your list, ie selling a couple of puppies, at puppy open days. So what you need to do is decide on a couple of hour time slot. Sunday afternoons are the best.

A few days beforehand, if that’s all we’ve got – or a week or two at most beforehand – you can create this as an event on Facebook and share it to groups that are interested in your particular breed in your area. You could say, “We’re having a puppy open day. Come and meet my Schnauzer puppies,” or whatever your puppies happen to be.

Don’t give out the details of where, just tell them when it is and if you want more information, PM me. So what they can do then is they can contact you for the time slot and the address and that way you can keep control over the identities and number of people who attend because what you’re going to find is puppy open days are extremely popular and you could end up with hundreds of people if you’re not careful.

So what I do in these days of COVID is I create three hour puppy open day and I stagger the attendees so I don’t get too much crowding in any one particular hour. So that way you can have maybe 10 or 15 people up each hour, and you’re going to find some people are going to want to buy your puppies. So that’s the fourth way to it and that only takes days.

Google My Business Listing

Now another way, if you have a couple of weeks up your sleeve, would be to create a listing on Google My Business. And that only takes minutes to set it up, but then it takes a couple of weeks for Google My Business to actually verify you and verify your address.

I wouldn’t put my actual address in the listing. You don’t want people coming and stealing your pups or turning up at funny hours. But I would definitely put my street name and my location, my general location, on there, and area of operation.

And then when someone does a search on breeders in your area, then you’re going to come up onto Google on the map. So that’s another thing you can do, which will take a few weeks.

Create a Website

Now, if you have a bit more time on your hand, the sixth thing you can do is to create a website. If you had a mating happening now, then that gives you four months before those puppies have to leave. If you were quick that would be just enough time for you to get your website up and going and start getting inquiries… if you knew what you were doing!

If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t do this because there’s no point creating a website if you actually don’t know how to make it get to the top of Google. But if you do, then you can create a website and that is your sixth thing you can do.

Create Quality Content

And the seventh thing to do is to create some good quality content for your website that’s optimized around the keywords that people searching for your puppies to buy are going to be searching for information on Google.

So what you want is your website pages optimized for those particular search terms to be coming up at number one when someone’s searching in your area. So that’s the next thing you need to do, create quality content that’s aimed at answering the questions of the people who are searching for puppies, because then you’ll end up in front of their face when they’re doing your research phase.

Create a Facebook Page

The eighth thing that you can do, if you haven’t already got a Facebook page, is to create a Facebook page. It takes only a few weeks to optimize that properly, but it does take a while for it to build up momentum and get enough followers in order to make it a useful avenue for you to find buyers for your puppies.

So you need to create it in the right category and needs to be optimized so that Google considers it to have high authority.

You also have to have enough reviews and you have to have enough followers for it to actually start working for you, so it takes a while.

It’s pretty quick to do the work, to set it up, but then you’ve got to actually post regularly on that site, the sort of content that people really love watching, which is cute little puppies. What I would do first is I would ask my previous owners and all my friends and family to like it and ask my previous owners to also give me a review.

Ask for PUPdates

And the other thing you can do to create great content for the Facebook page, that’s very, very shareable, is to get in contact with all of your previous owners and ask them for a pup date. You can say, “How are you going with little Oscar? I’d love to know how he’s going and see a recent photo. Would you mind please updating me on him?” And when they do send you that, then you’ve got material. You can say, “Look, is it okay if I share this and put it on your Facebook page?”

So there you are. There’s your nine ways of tracking great owners for your puppies and I wish you all the best as an ethical breeder.
