Tony: Dr. Meg, let me ask you this. Can you talk a little bit about how waiting lists work?
Dr Meg: This seems to be a bit of a mystery to some breeders. They just can’t get their heads around waiting lists.
As a result, they are scared to breed sometimes because often dogs will come on heat at the same time and they’re worried because they don’t have a waiting list, how will I move all those puppies coming at the same time? So, that often stops them from breeding at all.
So it is a big problem. And it can be unethical if it’s not done properly as well.
So, in a nutshell, what we need to do is realize that there are two kinds of buyers.
There’s a buyer who wants to have instant gratification: they decide they want a puppy and they want it yesterday! They’re not prepared to go on a waiting list. They’ll go into directories and see what puppies are available, and they’ll buy on price. They want a quick puppy and they want the cheapest one they can get.
What you’ve got to realize if you want to operate at the elite end of the market is that buyers after instant gratification are not your customer.
With waiting lists, we are actually catering to the top end of the market.
Top end buyers are prepared to wait for the right puppy because it’s a hugely important decision for them and they don’t take it lightly.
So, in setting up your waiting list, it’s got to be fair, it’s got to be legal, and you’ve got to be worth waiting for!
