Left-over pups? Here’s one solution you may not have considered.

The best way to avoid having puppies left over is to breed what people want. Here's one solution that won't suit everyone but could make all the difference to you and your success.

Are you one of those breeders (like many out there) who have found that over the years it’s become harder and harder to sell on your puppies by the time they’re eight weeks old?

Here’s one solution that won’t suit everyone but could make all the difference to you and your success.

Having Left Over Pups is Not Fun

Not that long ago you might have had long waiting lists.  Before your pups are even born, they’re already sold and things were going quite nicely for you.

But in recent years, you’ve found there’s been a lot of people have moved in and become dog breeders as well.  And the puppy sites are just absolutely crowded with puppies, with heaps of them left over.

So you find you’ve gradually joined the ranks of breeders who can’t sell all their pups. That’s a shocking situation to be in isn’t it? When pups are left over, there’s a big problem there.  You don’t only not get the money that you were planning on getting for those pups, but they also start losing their value very quickly.

And they also will need extra vaccinating, and extra worming.  Plus you really ought to be making sure they aren’t missing out on socialization during these critical weeks.  Problem is it’s very hard to socialize a group of puppies. That job really is best done one on one by the owners, right? But if they aren’t sold, it falls to you.  So it’s a problem.  Your pups aren’t getting the start they deserve.

Ever Though Of Doing This?

There is one creative idea I’ll share with you today. And that is to crossbreed. Why?  Because there’s a huge demand for designer dogs out there.  Just about anything crossed with a poodle is going to be in big demand. Likewise, anything crossed with a Pomeranian is going to be in big demand.  Even a big breed dog –  just from the novelty of it.

If you did that you’d probably easily get three and a half thousand dollars for your puppies. For example, of Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a poodle, a Bernadoodle, sells for three and a half thousand dollars in Canada.  In Australia we’ve got the Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles cross Poodle).  I’ve seen them for sale for five thousand! They’re getting more for those puppies than I’m getting for mine and I’m the top priced Miniature Schnauzer breeder in Australia!

Hey, I know if you’ve put a lot of work into your lines you probably aren’t going to want to mess them up by crossbreeding, but it’s still an option you could consider.

In the Short Term… What About This?

There is also a growing demand for puppies sold pre-trained.  And they can fetch a massive premium if properly marketed.  Here I’m talking three to four TIMES the usual price.

So if you have the skills and time to provide basic puppy training and good socialization, this could work very well for you.

However, for the premium pricing it is much better to have these puppies reserved way ahead of time. And that requires a great website with good search engine optimization.

  1. How would a miniature schnauzer cross miniature pincer (schnapin) sell? Would there be a market and would they be worth more than a purebred schnauzer?

  2. Hi,

To start with the designer Cavapoo, is it best to start with a female King Charles cavalier red and white then mix with a poodle? Is F1 generation or f1b more in demand ? I’ve noticed the mini or micro minis around 15-20 lbs are in demand , is this accurate? Do we need to study color breeding for cavapoos like tri color Bernedoodles etc?

    • Hi Julie. Both color and size impact price. In general smaller sells better. And yes, to get the most in-demand colors you need to understand the genetics. Do you research online e.g. puppyspot.com to check prices.
