Are You Producing QUALITY but Competing on PRICE?

Do you pour your heart and soul into your puppies and give them the very best start that you can? If you do, then listen up. Chances are you’re only getting the same price as breeders who don’t put as much love and care into their puppies as you do.

It’s so frustrating to be competing on price with the backyard breeder down the road.  They’re getting the same money you are it doesn’t seem fair, does it?

You know, the sort of breeder I’m talking about is someone whose puppies are born in your kitchen, or in your lounge, or maybe even in your bed. I have talked to breeders like that who have their puppies born on their bed and keep the puppies in the bedroom with their mum.

You might start off your puppies that way and then you’re playing with them every day, you’re interacting with them.  They’re getting lots of human contact. You might even be potty training them, you might even be leash training them before they go.  So you’re obviously a cut above the average breeder.

You really deserve to get more money than the average breeder, don’t you?

But all too often you’re not achieving that.

So I would like to share with you today something that you can do about that. One little tip that will help you towards getting the price you actually deserve for your puppies.

Craft a great message

And the answer is: you have to craft a great message to your buyers that clearly tells them what makes your puppies special. If you’re one of those breeders who is just taking phone calls or texting people, buyers may not even had a chance to learn what makes your puppies better than the rest, and what benefits that gives to them as an owner.

Now not all buyers are going to appreciate the importance of what you do, but that’s fine – they’re not your customers. You’ve got to be aiming at striking the hearts of the buyers who have done their research and can see value in what you’re doing. You must use your first message to buyers to explain the value. How what you do makes those puppies a better pet.  And make sure you craft a really long message that explains everything they want to know and shows you as a trustworthy and honorable breeder.

There’s a couple of things you’ve got to think about to put into your message to make it work.

Honest Info About Your Breed

The first thing is you’ve got to be totally honest about your breed. So tell them everything because a lot of breeders aren’t really that honest when they message their buyers. And that will make you stand out straightaway.

So we’re talking about who is your breed is best suited to, and who does it not suit perhaps. Why you fell in love with your breed? What is special about your breed? Does it have any special purposes?

And also the health issues associated with your breed and what you’re doing about them as a breeder to avoid those problems. And what problems people might have when they buy a puppy from a breeder who hasn’t put the care in to avoid those health issues. So talk about your breed.

Proof You’re Not a Puppy Mill

And then you need to show that you’re transparent. Because at the very least, the better owners want to be assured that you’re not a puppy mill.  So that means you have to offer some opportunity for the buyer to come out and see your premises, see your operations and meet your dogs. And if they want to, then they can come and satisfy themselves that you’re not a puppy mill.

Other Things to Include

What you also need to do is explain fully what makes your puppies special; what you’re doing to make them better pets.

And then you need to explain your health guarantee if you are offering one.

You need to tell them about your waiting list time and your pricing.

Be Professional!

You need to be professional as well. So being professional means having a Pricing Policy and having that published so that people can see what happens if they leave the list and other situations like that.

Charge More

I also recommend charging more than other breeders. If you’re a better breeder, charge accordingly.  If you’re charging less than other breeders then people aren’t going to believe that you’re actually turning out better puppies than someone else.

  3. Hey just wondering what platform breeders are selling on and why they use this way to sell their dogs.

    • Hi Brendan

Breeders are better off weaning themselves off puppy selling websites and establishing their own successful online presence on Facebook and with a website. These of course have to be properly optimised for Google. But it allows breeders to get a lot more high quality inquiries.
