Breeders around the world suffer from the same three main issues with their mindset. And these issues are a problem because they hold them back from experiencing the success they deserve.
- So the first one is that they worry about what people will think of them if they price their puppies outside the affordability of their friends and family in the area. So that definitely holds people back. The thing to remember here is that there is an abundance of cheap puppies out there. If people can’t afford yours, just guide them to getting a cheaper puppy elsewhere!
- Another common mindset problem is breeders who are scared to put their prices up, or breed for the pet market, because they’re really worried about what other breeders will say and think about them. Yes, the dog breeding world can be cliquey and back-stabbing. Don’t we all know it! But if you live your life to please everyone else, when will you ever get to live it to please you?
- The third thing that holds breeders back is not having a waiting list because they’re scared what will happen if I can’t deliver a puppy to the people who are on the waiting list, especially if asking for money for them to actually join the waiting list. But there are ways to manage this that are fair to everyone. I know because I’ve been doing it for decades. And the top end buyers actually like the security of being on a waiting list for the best puppies they can find, as they aren’t into instant gratification and they know they’ll eventually get the puppy of their dreams. And that’s well worth waiting for!
All of these mindset issues really stem from one major problem, and that is the belief deep inside that you’re not worthy of success, that you’re not worth it, that you’re not good enough.
I can’t do anything about you feeling that way.
What I can do is help you to make a success of your breeding business.
A big part of the solution to all of those mindset issues are to actually stop caring about what other people say.
You’ve got to develop a thicker skin if you want to be a highly successful dog breeder.
I call it putting on your “big girl pants” and not being afraid to stand out and forge ahead of the crowd rather than being content to stay the same as everybody else, which is going to hold you back and hold back your success.
If you’re doing a really fine job of turning out fabulous canine companions, you deserve to get more.
This is something you’ve got to realize, you deserve more!
You might see there’s a puppy farmer down the track on the other side of the country or whatever who’s selling puppies the same breed as yours, and they’re getting way more money than you are, and you just know that you’re doing a better job than they are to produce fantastic canine companions. So why should you sit back and not try to get decent amount of money for your puppies as well?
And if you’re scared about building a waiting list, then what I suggest you do is just make sure you have a really fair pricing policy in place, build your waiting list and just make sure that people can be refunded if you can’t supply a puppy within the timeframe that you’ve given them. It’s as simple as that.
